3D Breast Tomosynthesis
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), or 3D mammography, was approved by the FDA in February 2011 by a unanimous vote, for breast cancer screening. Hologic’s Selenia Dimensions DBT delivers superior screening and diagnostic performance as well as more comfort due to an advanced ergonomic design. When used in the combination 2D/3D mode it has a higher cancer detection rate. DBT combined with 2D mammography shows a measurable improvement in the detection of invasive breast cancer, in mass margin visibility, and a significant reduction in the need to call patients back for additional imaging.
Fifteen digital images are acquired of the breast in a 4-second scan as the machine arcs over the breast. These fifteen projection images are then reconstructed into a 3D image of the breast and are viewable as 1 mm slices.
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, although useful in all women, is particularly helpful in screening women with dense breast tissue. Breast density typically decreases with age, however over 40% of women in their sixties still have dense breast.
Every patient at Avestée is offered a combination mode 2D/3D mammogram. It is part of our commitment to your breast health.
